Young, Self-Directed and Black
Don’t let these skewed media images have you out here thinking Self-Directed Education is only for white people. It isn’t; it’s for any and everybody who wants it, and Chantrisse Parks, a black, self-directed young person, is one example of the varying faces of self-directed studies. Chantrisse is a brilliant example of that young, gifted, and Black energy that has been disrupting bullshit and actively working toward liberation since forever! After the Atlanta native landed a job in a traditional daycare, she was surprised and disappointed to find a rigid, standards-focused setting with a lack of free play and exploration for young children. The things she was learning in her college courses about how children learn best weren’t being practiced in this mainstream setting.

How Grief Unschooled Her
When Louvenia Wilkerson became a widow at 40 years old, grief and motherhood intersected in deeply difficult ways. The mother of three began a journey that caused her to question everything. Those questions led her to take her big pause from homeschooling, from entrepreneurship, and everything she identified with, including religion. Five years later, Lou and her children have happily transitioned into unschooling and taking a slow, steady approach to managing grief. With plans to own an RV and travel as an unschooling and road schooling family, life is looking good for Lou and her tribe. #POCinSDE

Listen to clips from three upcoming Raising Free People Network podcast series, and then let’s talk about trust issues in our relationships with children and ourselves. All of this is part of an ongoing movement toward normalized liberation for black people and for people of color the world over, who commit to forming community around raising free people. The series will be hosted by Daritcia in Puerto Rico, Monique Allison in Atlanta (Surviving Survival Mode), and Val Dee in Atlanta (The Other Side of MidLife). #POCinSDE

Wakanda Unschooling
I knew people were unschooling in Africa, but yo, Wakanda is blazing new trails! Wait ’til they get…real. The country where a brilliant young girl runs the country’s technology, a young and newly-made king decides that some aspects of his culture and tradition are ready for change, and gender equity is fully recognized; Wakanda is clearly the place to be! I left out so many instances of unschooling thought and deschooling in action, but I’m up for the discussion, so if you see me, Holla! In this episode I’ll share some of my favorite unschooling moments, and some of Atlanta’s most excited Black Panther movie fans will tell you why they’re all “Wakanda Forever” up in here!
